Keep in mind that you get what you pay for and with the new entry level CHEAP camera, the d60 you will get cheap results. Same applies to the lenses, as the optics of the glass set the max quality of an image and then the quality of the camera takes from it. Nikon, expect for the d300 and d3 (where the ISO is no longer standard and thus at high iso will not work with off camera light meters) has a LOT of grain/noise in the image at higher ISO,iso 800 or more and that will limit your printable size and image quality a lot!!! I hope nikon has added iso 100 to the d60, because not having it on the d40x and d70 was a total screw up on their part and made no sense!!

Also be aware there is no focusing motor int he d60, like the d40 and d40x, and thus you will be limited on the lenses you can use, and it will slow your AF on other lenses a LOT!!!!

Im not sure what kind of Marco you are looking to do, or if you are just wanting nice close ups of flowers (which is not really macro in most cases), but if you are not looking for true macro, 1:1 reproduction, which you can only get with a fixed dedicated macro lens, I would suggest the new Tamron 70-200 F2.8 For the $$ its a great lens, for any camera, Canon, nikon, sony, Pentax, etc… And you can get nice close up shots of flowers or such, granted not true macro, but most people dont want true macro, just close up.

Also remember the crop factor when picking lenses. IF you shot film before, there is a big difference between a 200mm lens on a film camera and a 200mm lens on most consumer cameras. The 200 on teh digital will be equal to about a 300-320mm on a film!!! So if you liek telephoto, it will allow you to get a lesser length lens, but a better quality one. Also by getting a better quality lens and camera, you can crop in if you need to on the image and still have a high quality image.

MP is not that big of a deal anymore, the actual image quality and the digital noise at higher ISO are the bigger deals. For example, I went from a 12+ mp Canon 5D to the 10mp Canon 1 D Mark 3 and have fine images, and can enlarge them as big or larger than I did with the 12mp….

I suggest for most beginers, the new Canon Rebel XSi. Its a great camera and gives high quality results at a budget price. Now the Canon 40D a lot of places is on sale for about $150-175 more than the Rebel (after the instant rebate, so around $950ish some place 975) and it is compared with teh Nikon d300, yet its 1/2 the price of the D300, so you can see the wonderful Value it has!!!

Figure out what you want to shoot, and your budget and see what is most important to you. Then look at the best body in your budget and maybe limit it to 1 good lens that will work for most things, and then in a few months add a 2nd lens…. One other big advantage to Canon, is you can find used lenses often at good prices. One of the advantages to them being the industry leader and having the market share in the SLR/DSLR markets!!!! Also All the Canon ef or efs lenses will work on the Rebel and 40D, as well as the 3rd party lenses for Canon. I feel the Tamron has the best quality of all the 3rd party lenses, and the SP line of the Tamron lenses is Very good!

But try to swing into a camera shop and see whihc one you like the feel of and such.

ISO is like film speed, the higher the # the less light you need to shoot, in, but the more grain/nosie the image will have. This is where Nikon is really lacking in its quality and where Canon blows most the rest away! My website has eagle shots, I took at ISO 800-1250 and I think even 1600 on it, and I can blow them upto 16×20 all day long…

Exposure is the proper balance of light and dark to get yrou image to look right. Over exposed, means too much light, and under exposed means not enough. Think of an image as a bucket of water. You need to fill it, but not let it overflow on the floor. If you turn the water off too soon, its only 1/2-3/4 full, (under exposed) but if you wait to long and give it too much water, the floor is all wet and washed out (over exposed).

Aperture is the setting the controls the light allowed thru the lens. It also affects the depth of field in the image.

Shutter speed, is the speed of the shutter moves, to allow a limited amount of light in. A faster shutter speed is used to stop action.

The combo of proper ISO, Apeture and Shutter speed, will give you your exposure.

YOu might want to check to see if your local community college has a class in photography, as it might help to get to know your new camera best and also different ways to shoot the same object/subject and get different results.

Actually in the entry level category, the Nikon D40 with two lenses is the best value. Under $550.

Next would be the D90 in the sub-$1,000 range and the most features for the buck would be the D700 full frame DSLR

On your budget I recommend Canon Digital Rebel XS Kit Set.

The Canon Rebel XS is an incredibly nice intro for a post-point-and-shoot photographer. The manual is explained quite well (even managing to simplify the concepts of f-stops and shutter speeds), and the camera itself is clever enough to generally get it right when set to Program (auto) mode.

For a DSLR, the camera isn’t overly heavy, and I haven’t felt it to be cumbersome in the variety of shooting situations in which I’ve used it.

The screen is a nice size, and the playbacks seem to mimic the color quality of the RAWs relatively faithfully.

One of my few complaints is with the amount of software provided. While this may seem a bit silly, the number of programs seems superfluous, as many of the functions of one are echoed in another. With my first two or three file transfers, I was sometimes confused as to why or whether I needed three of their provided programs open at once just to view my images.

Overall, the Rebel XS is a quality DSLR, and I’d recommend it to anyone starting out in serious photography.
