On the Nikons (D40, D300, D3, etc.) the D stand for their Digital slr series. On a Canon, that just stands for one part of their digital slr product line. Example: Canon XTi, Xsi, etc.
Incidently, Canon uses different names for the same cameras in different international markets. One of their digital SLR's is called the KISS in Japan, but you can imagine that migfht not go over well in the USA.
Digital
SLR = single lens reflex

D simply signifies "Digital," that these cameras are a part of Nikon's digital line. Similarly, the film cameras start with F, such as the F5.

I do not remember a time when Nikon SLR cameras were NOT call "F" something or other. This goes back about 35-40 years before digital cameras. "F" might sound like it means film, but there was only one choice when they started using the "F" designation. Sounds good, though…
I see the official Nikon site says that the Nikon F, introduced in 1959, was the company's first SLR camera.
